Lightning McQueen enters the Florida 500 near the end of Pixar’s Cars 3.
The race is held at the fictional Florida International Super Speedway and serves as the film’s decisive competition. McQueen initially intends to race against Jackson Storm, but his strategy changes after Cruz Ramirez proves that she can compete at the highest level.
McQueen’s decision to support Cruz reflects the movie’s central theme: a champion’s legacy can continue through mentorship rather than only through personal victories. Cruz takes over as the active racer, while McQueen adopts a role inspired by Doc Hudson’s guidance of him.
The Florida 500 is not the same event as the Piston Cup season title, although the film uses the race to resolve McQueen’s competitive future. The original Cars centers on the Piston Cup, while Cars 3 focuses on the transition between generations of racers.
