What is the name of the race held in Cars 2 as the film's international championship?

The story behind the answer

The World Grand Prix is the international championship race held in Pixar's Cars 2.

The competition is organized by Sir Miles Axlerod to promote Allinol, an alternative fuel. Lightning McQueen enters the event, while Mater becomes involved in the espionage plot surrounding the fuel and the races. The World Grand Prix visits three principal locations: Tokyo, Porto Corsa and London.

The event is not the same competition as the Piston Cup from the first Cars film. The Piston Cup is an American stock-car racing championship and is central to Lightning's original career. Cars 2 expands the series into a globe-spanning spy adventure, so the World Grand Prix provides the story's sporting framework.

The film's racing action includes different surfaces and settings rather than a single oval-track format. This international structure also explains why characters from several countries appear in the story. The World Grand Prix should not be confused with the later Cars 3 race called the Florida 500.
