Digory Kirke is the professor who shelters the Pevensie children in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books.
He is introduced in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as the eccentric owner of the large country house where Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy stay during the Second World War. When Lucy claims to have entered another world through a wardrobe, Digory takes her report seriously rather than dismissing it.
Digory is also a central character in The Magician’s Nephew, which serves as a prequel to the other published Narnia novels. As a boy, he witnesses the creation of Narnia and becomes involved in the arrival of Jadis, who later becomes the White Witch. The story also explains why the wardrobe is connected to Narnia.
The character links the beginning and end of Narnia’s fictional history. In The Last Battle, the older Professor Kirke is among the human characters who enter the true Narnia. Lewis based some aspects of the professor on his own childhood tutor, William T. Kirkpatrick.
