hairspray
Answer
hairspray
The product used to hold hair in place is hairspray.
Hairspray is a styling product sprayed onto hair to help preserve a chosen shape against movement, humidity, and wind. Its hold comes mainly from polymers that form a thin film around the strands as the liquid dries. Formulas may offer flexible, medium, or maximum hold, depending on how firmly the film resists movement.
A typical hairspray contains styling polymers, solvents, plasticizers, fragrances, and a propellant in aerosol versions. Alcohols such as ethanol or isopropanol commonly carry the polymers before evaporating. Hair gel and wax can also provide hold, but they are applied directly and usually create a different texture: gel tends to form a wetter or stiffer finish, while wax adds separation and pliability.
Early hairsprays appeared in Europe during the 1920s. In the United States, aerosol packaging helped the product expand in the 1940s, and Chase Products packaged a widely noted version in 1948. CFC propellants were later replaced because of environmental concerns. Hairspray became especially prominent during the large, sculpted hairstyles of the 1950s and 1980s.
