What is the name of the prison in The Shawshank Redemption (1994)?

The story behind the answer

The prison in The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is Shawshank State Penitentiary.

The film follows banker Andy Dufresne after he is sentenced to life imprisonment for a crime he says he did not commit. At Shawshank, he forms a lasting friendship with Ellis “Red” Redding and gradually uses his financial expertise, patience, and knowledge to improve conditions for prisoners.

Frank Darabont wrote and directed the film, adapting Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” from the 1982 collection Different Seasons. The prison setting is fictional, while much of the movie was filmed at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio.

The name is sometimes shortened casually to “Shawshank,” but the full fictional institution is Shawshank State Penitentiary. It should not be confused with Fox River State Penitentiary, the fictional prison in the television series Prison Break.
