What is the name of the princess in the Brothers Grimm version of Sleeping Beauty?

The story behind the answer

In the Brothers Grimm version of Sleeping Beauty, the princess is called Little Briar Rose. The tale appears in the Grimms’ collection under the German title Dornröschen, usually translated into English as “Little Briar Rose” or “Briar Rose.”

The story was included as KHM 50 in the first volume of Kinder- und Hausmärchen, published in 1812. A prophecy says the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and fall into a deep sleep, so the king orders every spindle in the kingdom destroyed. Despite the ban, she eventually encounters one in a tower.

After she falls asleep, the entire castle is enclosed by a vast thorn hedge. A prince reaches the castle after many years, and his arrival breaks the spell. In the Grimms’ version, the story ends soon after the princess awakens; it does not include the extended second episode found in some older versions.

Aurora is the name most associated with Disney and Tchaikovsky adaptations. “Sleeping Beauty” is the tale’s common English label, not the princess’s Grimm name.
