The planet that served as the capital of the Galactic Republic is Coruscant. A planet-spanning city, Coruscant houses the Galactic Senate and the central institutions of Republic government, making it the political heart of the galaxy.
Its urban surface is known as an ecumenopolis: a world almost entirely covered by interconnected buildings, transport routes and layered city districts. The Jedi Temple also stands on Coruscant, linking the planet’s governmental importance with the Jedi Order’s religious and administrative role. The planet is especially prominent in the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars.
Coruscant remained the capital when Chancellor Palpatine transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire. It is sometimes confused with Naboo because Palpatine and Padmé are associated with that world, but Naboo is a member planet rather than the Republic’s capital. Alderaan and Tatooine are important Star Wars locations, yet neither served as the Republic’s capital.
