Druzhba pipeline
Answer
Druzhba pipeline
The Druzhba pipeline is the pipeline system that carries crude oil from Russia to parts of Europe.
Druzhba means “Friendship” in Russian. Construction began in the late 1950s, and the system began operating in the 1960s. It was developed by the Soviet Union to transport crude from fields in western Siberia and other production areas toward refineries in Eastern and Central Europe.
The network divides into northern and southern branches after entering Belarus. Its routes have historically served countries including Poland, Germany, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, although use and operating arrangements have changed over time because of politics, sanctions, and energy-policy decisions.
Druzhba is an oil pipeline, not a natural-gas pipeline. It is also distinct from the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline, which carries crude from the Caspian region to Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
