What is the name of the penguin family’s only surviving genus with species that live in Africa and South America?

The story behind the answer

Spheniscus is the living penguin genus with species native to Africa and South America.

The genus Spheniscus includes the African penguin, Humboldt penguin, Magellanic penguin, and Galápagos penguin. These species are commonly grouped as banded penguins because adults have dark breast bands and related markings.

Their distributions show how penguins are not restricted to Antarctica. African penguins live along the coasts of southern Africa, while Humboldt and Magellanic penguins occur along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America. The Galápagos penguin reaches the equator and is the only penguin species naturally found north of it.

Spheniscus is distinct from Pygoscelis, which contains several Antarctic penguins, and Aptenodytes, which contains the emperor and king penguins.
