The penguin character who stars in the animated television series Pingu is Pingu.
Pingu is a young penguin who lives with his family in an Antarctic setting. The stop-motion series was created by Swiss animator Otmar Gutmann and first appeared in 1990. Its characters communicate largely through the invented language called Penguinese rather than ordinary spoken dialogue.
The program follows Pingu through family life, school, friendships, and childhood mischief. His companion is a seal named Robby, while his younger sister is Pinga. The simple visual style helped the series travel successfully across language boundaries.
Pingu is sometimes confused with Pengo, an unrelated arcade-game character, but Pingu is the title character and the show’s name.
