Roosevelt purchased land on Cove Neck, near Oyster Bay on Long Island, in 1880. The house was designed by the New York firm Lamb & Rich in a shingle-style Queen Anne design and completed in 1885. Roosevelt lived there with his family until his death in 1919, making it his principal home and the place most closely associated with his private life.

During Roosevelt’s presidency, Sagamore Hill became known as the “Summer White House.” He hosted political visitors and foreign dignitaries there, and discussions connected with the end of the Russo-Japanese War took place during this period. The house remained filled with much of its original furniture and personal effects.

A common mix-up is confusing Sagamore Hill with the official White House in Washington, D.C. Sagamore Hill was never the president’s formal residence; it was his family home and an informal presidential retreat. Congress established Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in 1962, and the National Park Service now preserves the property and a Theodore Roosevelt museum on the grounds.
