What is the name of the organization opposed to the Assassins in Assassin's Creed lore?

The story behind the answer

The Templar Order is the organization opposed to the Assassins in Assassin's Creed lore.

The conflict between the Assassins and Templars is the series' central historical struggle. Assassins generally defend free will and resist centralized control, while Templars seek peace and order through authority, often using political influence and ancient technology to pursue that goal.

The rivalry appears across many historical periods, although the names and structures change. Earlier games show Templars operating through medieval and Renaissance institutions, while later stories connect them to the Order of Ancients and, in the modern era, Abstergo Industries.

The opposing group is easy to confuse with related factions. The Hidden Ones are the early organization founded by Bayek and Aya, while the Order of Ancients is a predecessor to the Templar Order in games such as Assassin's Creed Origins. The Cult of Kosmos is the enemy faction in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, but it is not the series-wide name for the Assassins' main adversaries.
