What is the name of the ocean current featured in the film?

The story behind the answer

The ocean current featured in Finding Nemo is the East Australian Current.

In the film, Crush and the other sea turtles use the East Australian Current, commonly called the EAC, to travel southward along Australia’s eastern coast. Marlin and Dory encounter the turtles after being swept into the current, and the fast-moving stream carries them toward Sydney.

The EAC is a real western boundary current in the South Pacific Ocean. It transports warm tropical water south along Australia’s coast before becoming less organized and separating into branches. Its real-world flow helps explain why the movie presents it as a powerful natural “highway” for marine animals.

A common mix-up is the California Current, which flows along the western coast of North America, or the Gulf Stream, which is associated with the North Atlantic. The Kuroshio Current is another major western boundary current, but it flows near Japan rather than Australia. Finding Nemo uses the real EAC as a memorable story device.
