What is the name of the Númenórean capital city in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium?

The story behind the answer

Armenelos is the capital city of Númenor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.

Númenor is the great island kingdom granted to the Edain after the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age. Armenelos, also called Armenelos the Golden, serves as the royal city and seat of the Númenórean kings. It stands near the mountain Meneltarma and is associated with the island’s political and religious life.

Númenor reaches great power during the Second Age, but its history eventually turns toward pride, fear of death, and rebellion against the Valar. Under King Ar-Pharazôn, the Númenóreans challenge the powers of the West. The island is destroyed and submerged in the Downfall of Númenor.

Armenelos is sometimes confused with Avallónë, an Elven city on Tol Eressëa, or with Osgiliath and Minas Tirith, which are cities of Gondor in Middle-earth. Those places belong to different cultures and histories.
