Ghost Ranch is the New Mexico landscape associated with Georgia O'Keeffe.
Ghost Ranch lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, among dramatic cliffs and high-desert formations. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s and found its colors, bones, hills, and immense skies especially compelling.
She made many paintings from subjects observed around the ranch, including the Pedernal mountain. Her repeated use of the landscape helped make Ghost Ranch part of her public identity, although she also worked extensively in and around Abiquiú and other parts of New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch was not simply an artist's retreat. It became a conference and education center associated with the Presbyterian Church, and its scenery has also appeared in films. The name is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home, but the ranch and the house are separate places.
