Ghost Ranch is the New Mexico ranch community closely associated with Georgia O'Keeffe.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape near Abiquiú, in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the late 1920s and found subjects there for paintings of cliffs, hills, bones, and broad desert spaces. Its layered red and yellow formations became recognizable elements in her New Mexico imagery.
O'Keeffe maintained a home and studio at Ghost Ranch for part of her New Mexico career. She also lived at Abiquiú, where she had a more secluded adobe home and studio. The two locations are related but are not interchangeable: Ghost Ranch is the larger landscape and ranch community, while Abiquiú is the nearby village and site of another important residence.
Ghost Ranch is now associated with education, retreats, paleontology, and tourism as well as O'Keeffe's art. Its scenery continues to attract visitors interested in the places behind her paintings.
