The landscape Georgia O'Keeffe called The Black Place is known as Black Place.
Black Place is a dark, jagged geological formation near Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe repeatedly painted it and described the site as a place she returned to because of its powerful shapes and intense contrasts.
The subject reflects her practice of focusing closely on selected natural forms rather than presenting a conventional panoramic view. She transformed cliffs, bones, flowers, and other objects into simplified compositions with strong lines and unusual scale.
Black Place should not be confused with O'Keeffe's paintings of the nearby Red Hills or with the unrelated New Mexico landmark White Sands. The name is especially associated with her own description of the dark landscape and with the paintings derived from it.
