The New Mexico landmark repeatedly painted by Georgia O'Keeffe is Pedernal.
Pedernal is a flat-topped mountain near Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú. O'Keeffe saw it from her New Mexico surroundings and returned to its distinctive silhouette many times. She famously described the mountain as her private one, saying that if she painted it often enough, she could have it.
The mountain appears in paintings with simplified contours, changing skies, and strong color contrasts. O'Keeffe was less interested in making a literal survey image than in transforming a familiar place into a personal visual symbol.
Pedernal is sometimes mistaken for other dramatic New Mexico formations, particularly Shiprock. Shiprock is a different volcanic formation in the Four Corners region. O'Keeffe's recurring mountain is Pedernal, whose recognizable flat summit became one of the signature forms of her New Mexico work.
