What is the name of the Netflix miniseries about a high school chess prodigy?

The story behind the answer

The Netflix miniseries about a high school chess prodigy is The Queen's Gambit. It follows Beth Harmon, a fictional orphan who discovers extraordinary talent for chess and rises through the competitive chess world.

The seven-episode period drama begins in the 1950s and continues into the 1960s. After Beth is sent to an orphanage, the custodian Mr. Shaibel teaches her chess. She develops exceptional visualization skills and begins entering tournaments, eventually facing elite American and Soviet players while struggling with addiction, grief, and isolation.

The series was created and written by Scott Frank with Allan Scott, and it adapts Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name. Its title refers to the Queen's Gambit, a real chess opening in which White offers a pawn to influence control of the center. The title is therefore both the name of the show and a direct chess reference.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the adult Beth Harmon, while Isla Johnston portrays Beth as a child. Netflix released the miniseries on October 23, 2020, and chess consultants included Garry Kasparov and Bruce Pandolfini.
