What is the name of the mountain where Tolkien’s Dwarves reclaim their kingdom in The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

The mountain where Tolkien’s Dwarves reclaim their kingdom in The Hobbit is the Lonely Mountain.

The Lonely Mountain, also called Erebor, is the former home of the Dwarves of Durin’s Folk. The dragon Smaug drives them from it and takes possession of their vast treasure hoard before the events of the novel.

Thorin Oakenshield leads the company that travels with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf to recover the mountain. After Smaug is killed, the Dwarves regain Erebor, although the Battle of the Five Armies follows soon afterward.

The Lonely Mountain is not Mount Doom, the volcanic stronghold in Mordor, and it is not the Misty Mountains, the range crossed earlier in the journey. Erebor is the mountain’s proper Sindarin name, while ‘the Lonely Mountain’ is its familiar English title.
