What is the name of the Ming dynasty imperial palace in Beijing?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the Ming dynasty imperial palace in Beijing? The answer is the Forbidden City.

The Forbidden City was built in Beijing between 1406 and 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, Zhu Di. After moving the Ming capital from Nanjing to Beijing, Yongle commissioned the vast palace complex as the central residence and ceremonial seat of imperial power.

The complex housed 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was not simply a residence: its halls hosted court ceremonies, audiences, imperial weddings, enthronements, and state rituals. The name reflects the restricted access imposed by the imperial court; ordinary people could not enter without permission.

The Forbidden City is also called the Imperial Palace or, in Chinese, the Zijincheng, meaning “Purple Forbidden City.” It is often confused with the Summer Palace, a separate Qing-era imperial retreat, or with the Temple of Heaven, a major ritual site south of the palace. Since 1925, the complex has operated as the Palace Museum.
