What is the name of the meteorite crater in Arizona formed about 50,000 years ago?

The story behind the answer

Meteor Crater is the Arizona meteorite crater formed about 50,000 years ago. It lies near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert and is officially known as Barringer Crater.

The crater formed when an iron-rich asteroid roughly 50 metres wide struck Earth at tremendous speed. The explosion excavated a bowl-shaped depression about 1.2 kilometres across and approximately 170 metres deep. Although erosion has modified its shape, the crater remains exceptionally well preserved.

The site was once debated as volcanic in origin, but geological evidence—including shocked minerals and fragments of meteoritic iron—confirmed an impact origin. A common mix-up is calling it Barringer Meteorite Crater; Meteor Crater is the widely used public name, while Barringer Crater honours mining engineer Daniel Barringer, who investigated the site.
