In geology, which tectonic plate is the largest on Earth?
Answer
Pacific Plate
Answer
Pacific Plate
In geology, the Pacific Plate is the largest tectonic plate on Earth.
It covers most of the Pacific Ocean basin and includes both oceanic crust and some continental fragments. Much of its boundary is marked by subduction zones, where oceanic lithosphere sinks beneath neighboring plates. This exceptionally active margin is widely known as the Ring of Fire.
The Pacific Plate is moving generally northwest, though its exact motion varies by location and reference frame. Its boundaries include spreading ridges, transform faults, and convergent zones, making it central to the study of earthquakes and volcanoes.
The Pacific Plate is not the same as the Pacific Ocean: the ocean includes regions lying over other plates, while the plate itself is a moving slab of lithosphere beneath the basin.
