What is the name of the main villain in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The story behind the answer

The main villain in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the White Witch.

She rules Narnia through fear and magic, keeping the land in a winter that has lasted for a hundred years without Christmas. Her personal name is Jadis, and she is also connected to the earlier history of Narnia described in The Magician’s Nephew. In the first published Narnia book, however, the character is most commonly identified by the title White Witch.

The White Witch tempts Edmund Pevensie with enchanted Turkish Delight and promises him power. Her actions help drive the central conflict between her forces and Aslan’s supporters. Aslan eventually defeats her at the Stone Table and later on the battlefield.

The character is sometimes confused with the Lady of the Green Kirtle, who is the principal antagonist of The Silver Chair. Both are powerful female villains in Narnia, but they are distinct characters. The White Witch belongs specifically to the story of Narnia’s long winter.
