What is the name of the magical lion in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

Aslan is the magical lion in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Aslan is the creator and ruler of Narnia, and he appears throughout the series as its most powerful and benevolent figure. The novels present him as wise, courageous, and willing to sacrifice himself for others. His role is especially prominent in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Lewis stated that Aslan was not intended to be a simple allegorical code for Jesus. Instead, he imagined how Christ might appear in a world such as Narnia, where the central figure would naturally take the form of a lion. The character nevertheless carries clear Christian resonances.

The name Aslan comes from the Turkish word for “lion.” Mr. Tumnus, Puddleglum, and Rilian are also Narnian characters, but none is the series’ lion ruler.
