What is the name of the magazine that first published many Holmes stories?

The story behind the answer

The magazine that first published many Sherlock Holmes stories was The Strand Magazine.

Founded by George Newnes, the British monthly began publication in January 1891, with Herbert Greenhough Smith as its long-serving editor. Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories became one of its biggest attractions, beginning with “A Scandal in Bohemia,” published in the July 1891 issue. The stories were later collected in books such as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

The Strand helped transform Holmes from a literary curiosity into a hugely popular character. Its affordable price and mass circulation brought illustrated detective fiction to a broad audience. Sidney Paget’s illustrations, published in the magazine, also helped establish the familiar visual image of Holmes, including his deerstalker and curved pipe.

A common mix-up is the first Holmes novel: A Study in Scarlet appeared before The Strand, in 1887. The Strand is especially associated with the many short stories that followed, including “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
