The Looney Tunes short that introduced Tweety was “A Tale of Two Kitties.”

Released in 1942, this Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies cartoon was directed by Bob Clampett. Tweety appears as a baby bird targeted by two hungry cats, Babbit and Catstello, comic stand-ins for the real-life comedy team Abbott and Costello.

The bird was not yet the familiar yellow canary. During production and in the cartoon itself, he was called Orson, appeared pink and featherless, and behaved far more aggressively than the later character. He attacks the cats rather than simply outsmarting them, and the short includes an early version of his famous “I tawt I taw a puddy tat!” catchphrase.

A common mix-up is “Tweetie Pie,” the 1947 short that paired Tweety with Sylvester and helped establish the best-known version of the character. “I Taw a Putty Tat” is also a later Tweety cartoon, not his debut. The character’s design had even been previewed in Clampett’s 1942 short “Wacky Blackout,” but “A Tale of Two Kitties” is recognized as Tweety’s first appearance.
