The London museum founded with Queen Victoria’s support was the Victoria and Albert Museum. It began in 1852 as the Museum of Manufactures, created after the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851 to improve public access to art, design and industrial education.

The institution moved to its present South Kensington site in 1857 and was then known as the South Kensington Museum. Prince Albert was a major force behind its creation, while Queen Victoria officially opened the new museum. In 1899, she laid the foundation stone for new buildings and renamed it the Victoria and Albert Museum in honour of herself and her late husband.

The V&A is dedicated chiefly to decorative arts and design, with collections spanning thousands of years and cultures.
