What is the name of the largest tree in the world by volume? The answer is General Sherman, a giant sequoia in California’s Sequoia National Park. It is considered the largest known living single-stem tree when measured by the volume of its trunk.

General Sherman belongs to the species Sequoiadendron giganteum and grows in the Giant Forest. Its estimated trunk volume is about 1,487 cubic metres, or 52,508 cubic feet. The tree is roughly 2,300–2,700 years old, although exact ages are difficult to establish without cutting it down.

The tree was named after American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, reportedly in 1879. In 1931, comparisons with the nearby General Grant Tree helped establish trunk volume as a practical standard for comparing the size of giant trees.

General Sherman is often confused with Hyperion, which is the tallest known living tree, or Árbol del Tule, famous for its enormous trunk diameter. Those trees hold different records. General Sherman is also not necessarily the largest tree ever recorded: some historical trees, including the felled Crannell Creek Giant, may have been larger.
