What is the name of the largest glacier in the Karakoram range?

The story behind the answer

The largest glacier in the Karakoram range is the Siachen Glacier. It lies in the eastern Karakoram, in the Himalayas, and is generally described as the range’s longest glacier as well as its largest by area.

Siachen stretches about 76 kilometres when its longest route is measured, although some measurements give roughly 70 kilometres from Indira Col. The glacier descends from approximately 5,753 metres at its head to about 3,620 metres at its terminus. Its meltwater feeds the Nubra River, which joins the Shyok River.

The glacier is internationally known not only for its size but also for its strategic location. India has administered the glacier and the major passes on the nearby Saltoro Ridge since 1984, while Pakistan claims the region and controls territory west of the ridge. The extreme altitude, heavy snowfall, crevasses and severe cold make it one of the world’s most dangerous military environments.

The Biafo Glacier, about 63 kilometres long, is often cited as the Karakoram’s second-longest glacier. Baltoro is especially famous because it provides access to K2 and other major peaks, but it is not the range’s largest glacier.
