What is the name of the large yellow bird on Sesame Street?
Answer
Big Bird
Answer
Big Bird
The large yellow bird on Sesame Street is Big Bird. Created by Jim Henson and built by puppeteer and costume designer Kermit Love, Big Bird first appeared when Sesame Street debuted in 1969.
Big Bird is an approximately eight-foot-tall flightless bird who lives in a nest near 123 Sesame Street. Although he is written as a curious, gentle child, the character is often described within the show's world as a bird resembling a canary. His size is part of the joke: he towers over the human characters while still having the emotional outlook of a young child.
Caroll Spinney performed Big Bird from 1969 through 2018, making the role one of television puppetry's most enduring performances. Matt Vogel, who had served as an understudy, became the character's full-time performer in 2018. Big Bird is often confused with Snuffleupagus, his best friend, but Snuffy is a separate character and not a bird.
