What is the name of the large volcanic caldera in Tanzania that is a wildlife sanctuary?

The story behind the answer

The large volcanic caldera in Tanzania that serves as a wildlife sanctuary is Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed caldera of a huge ancient volcano in northern Tanzania. The volcano is believed to have been larger than Mount Kilimanjaro before a massive eruption and collapse created the roughly circular basin seen today. Its steep walls enclose grasslands, forests, wetlands, and a shallow alkaline lake, producing a remarkably concentrated wildlife habitat.

The crater floor supports lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest, and many other species. It is also one of the places where visitors may see the endangered black rhinoceros. Because animals can find water and food within the enclosed ecosystem, the crater is not simply a stop on the Great Migration in the same way as the Serengeti, although migratory animals move through the wider surrounding landscape.

A frequent confusion is between Ngorongoro Crater and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater is a specific geological feature inside the much larger protected area, which also contains archaeological sites such as Olduvai Gorge and is inhabited by Maasai pastoralists. “Mount Ngorongoro” and “Kibo Crater” are not the canonical names for this landmark.
