The large Baroque monastery in Melk, Austria, is Melk Abbey.

Also known as Stift Melk, it is a Benedictine abbey perched on a rocky outcrop above the town of Melk and the Danube in Lower Austria. Its present Baroque complex was built from 1702 to 1736, following designs by architect Jakob Prandtauer. The dramatic yellow-and-white buildings, monumental church, and elevated position make it one of Austria’s best-known Baroque landmarks.

The site’s monastic history is much older than the current buildings. Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, gave a castle at Melk to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey in 1089. A school and an important manuscript library developed there, and Melk later became a centre of the fifteenth-century reform movement that renewed Benedictine life.

Visitors sometimes confuse Melk Abbey with Klosterneuburg or St. Florian Abbey, other major Austrian monasteries. Melk is especially associated with its Danube setting, grand library, and frescoed church interiors.
