Bilbo Baggins lives in the Shire in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories. The Shire is a settled region of northwestern Middle-earth inhabited mainly by Hobbits. It includes familiar locations such as Hobbiton, Bywater, Michel Delving, and Tuckborough.
Bilbo’s home is Bag End, a comfortable smial built into a hill in Hobbiton. Frodo Baggins later inherits Bag End and begins his journey from there after receiving the One Ring from Bilbo. The Shire’s peaceful countryside deliberately contrasts with the dangers beyond its borders.
The Shire is not the same place as Bree, where Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin meet Aragorn. Rivendell is the Elven refuge founded by Elrond, while Gondor is a human kingdom far to the south. After the War of the Ring, the Shire suffers damage from Saruman’s agents in the book, leading to the chapter often called ‘The Scouring of the Shire.’
