Answer
Sukhna Lake
Answer
Sukhna Lake
The lake in Chandigarh designed by Le Corbusier is Sukhna Lake.
Sukhna Lake is a man-made reservoir at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills in northern India. It was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream. The lake formed part of Chandigarh’s larger vision as a carefully planned modern city with generous spaces for recreation and contact with nature.
Le Corbusier was involved in creating the lake along with Chandigarh’s chief engineer, L. Verma. He strongly supported preserving its quiet atmosphere, including restrictions on motorboats and vehicular traffic across the dam promenade.
Sukhna Lake is not a naturally formed lake, which is a common source of confusion. It covers roughly 3 square kilometres and has faced siltation because of runoff from the surrounding hills. In 1974, the stream was diverted through a bypass system to reduce the amount of silt entering the reservoir.
