What is the name of the inn where the Hobbits meet Strider in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The Hobbits meet Strider at The Prancing Pony in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The Prancing Pony is an inn in Bree, a settlement where Men and Hobbits live near the eastern edge of Eriador. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay there after leaving the Shire. Frodo uses the name Underhill, but a public incident involving the One Ring draws attention to him and alerts the Black Riders that the travelers are nearby.

Aragorn, still calling himself Strider, approaches the Hobbits at the inn and offers to guide them to Rivendell. His knowledge of the wild and the enemies pursuing Frodo makes him an essential ally.

The Green Dragon is another inn, located in Bywater in the Shire, and is associated with Hobbiton’s local life. The Prancing Pony therefore belongs specifically to Bree, not the Shire. Bree-land is also home to the village of Staddle and the settlement of Combe.
