What is the name of the influential Han dynasty mathematical text?

The story behind the answer

The influential Han dynasty mathematical text is The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art.

Known in Chinese as the Jiuzhang Suanshu, this anonymous work developed over several centuries, drawing on earlier mathematical traditions before reaching a form associated with the Han period. Rather than presenting abstract theorems in the Greek style, it usually gives a practical problem, states a method, and shows how to calculate the result. Its subjects include land measurement, taxation, trade, engineering, fractions, areas, volumes, and systems of equations.

The book contains nine chapters and became one of the most important works in the Chinese mathematical tradition. The mathematician Liu Hui wrote a detailed commentary in 263 CE, explaining procedures and offering geometric reasoning, including a more accurate approximation of pi. Chapter Eight describes a method for solving simultaneous linear equations that resembles modern Gaussian elimination. The Zhoubi Suanjing was also an important early Chinese mathematical and astronomical text, but it is a separate work.
