The building grew into a sprawling mansion with staircases leading nowhere, doors opening onto walls, windows overlooking other rooms and corridors that were deliberately confusing.

The popular story says Sarah Winchester built continuously to confuse or appease spirits killed by Winchester rifles. That haunting explanation is part of the house’s legend, but historians cannot prove that it was her actual reason.
