What is the name of the hotel where the climactic confrontation occurs?

The story behind the answer

The climactic confrontation in The Great Gatsby occurs at the Plaza Hotel. In a suite there, Tom Buchanan confronts Jay Gatsby about his affair with Daisy, while Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker are also present.

The confrontation takes place during a sweltering day in New York City, after the characters leave the Buchanans’ house in East Egg. Gatsby demands that Daisy say she never loved Tom and insists that her marriage was only a mistake. Daisy cannot fully accept Gatsby’s version of the past: she admits loving Tom as well as Gatsby, destroying his hope of recreating their earlier romance exactly.

The Plaza scene is the novel’s emotional and structural turning point. Gatsby’s carefully maintained persona collides with Tom’s aggression and Daisy’s uncertainty. Afterward, Daisy drives Gatsby’s yellow car and fatally strikes Myrtle Wilson on the road back to Long Island.

The hotel is often confused with the setting of the later deaths, but Gatsby is killed at his mansion and Myrtle dies near George Wilson’s garage. The Plaza is the site of the central confrontation, not either fatal scene.
