What is the name of the hotel manager in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining?
Answer
Stuart Ullman
Answer
Stuart Ullman
Stuart Ullman is the hotel manager in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Played by Barry Nelson, Ullman interviews Jack Torrance for the winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel. During the meeting, he explains that the hotel closes during the snowy season and warns Jack about the 1970 incident in which caretaker Charles Grady killed his family before killing himself.
Ullman’s calm, businesslike presentation contrasts with the disturbing history he describes. His conversation also introduces the hotel’s isolation, which becomes central to the film’s tension once Jack, Wendy, and Danny are cut off by winter weather.
Viewers sometimes confuse Ullman with Dick Hallorann, the hotel’s head chef. Hallorann is the employee who recognizes Danny’s psychic ability, called “the shining,” and later returns to the hotel. Lloyd, meanwhile, is the mysterious bartender Jack encounters in the Gold Room. These are separate characters with different functions in the story.
