What is the name of the hotel in the show Fawlty Towers?

The story behind the answer

The hotel in the show is called Fawlty Towers.

It is the fictional Torquay hotel owned and operated by Basil Fawlty and his wife, Sybil. The name appears on the hotel sign at the start of the programme, although the sign is famously rearranged into different humorous anagrams in many episodes.

The hotel is presented as a respectable establishment that Basil desperately wants to make more sophisticated. In practice, poor management, staff confusion, demanding guests, and Basil’s explosive temper repeatedly turn ordinary hotel problems into elaborate farce.

The name is fictional, but the setting has a real-world connection. John Cleese and Connie Booth drew inspiration from the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, whose eccentric co-owner Donald Sinclair helped shape Basil Fawlty’s character. The programme’s exterior filming location, however, was not a real Fawlty Towers hotel in Torquay.
