Joey is the horse at the center of Steven Spielberg’s 2011 film War Horse.
The story follows Joey from his youth on an English farm through his service during the First World War. After being sold to the army, Joey passes through the lives of soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict.
Joey’s journey links several human stories rather than giving the horse spoken dialogue. The film shows cavalry charges, artillery warfare, farm life, and the devastating effects of mechanized combat through the animal’s changing circumstances.
War Horse was adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel and also drew on the stage production that became known for its life-sized horse puppets. Jeremy Irvine plays Albert Narracott, Joey’s young owner, while Emily Watson and Peter Mullan play Albert’s parents.
