What is the name of the Gothic cathedral in Vienna, Austria?
Answer
St. Stephen's Cathedral
Answer
St. Stephen's Cathedral
The Gothic cathedral in Vienna, Austria, is St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Known in German as Stephansdom, it is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna and stands in the city center at Stephansplatz. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr.
Its history combines Romanesque and Gothic construction. An earlier church was consecrated in 1147, while major Gothic expansion began under Duke Rudolf IV in the 14th century. The south tower, completed in 1433, rises about 137 meters and is one of Vienna's most recognizable landmarks.
A common mix-up is confusing it with St. Peter's Church or St. Charles Church, both also prominent Viennese churches. St. Rupert's Church is another historic Vienna building, but St. Stephen's is the city's cathedral and archiepiscopal seat.
