What is the name of the Gothic cathedral in Cologne, Germany?
Answer
Cologne Cathedral
Answer
Cologne Cathedral
The Gothic cathedral in Cologne, Germany, is Cologne Cathedral.
Called Kölner Dom in German, it is formally the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter. The Catholic cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and stands beside the Rhine in the heart of Cologne.
Its foundation stone was laid in 1248, partly to provide a magnificent setting for the Shrine of the Three Kings, a major pilgrimage destination. Medieval construction stopped around the 16th century, leaving the building unfinished for centuries. Work resumed in the 19th century, and the cathedral was completed according to its medieval plan in 1880.
Cologne Cathedral is often confused with other famous German churches, including Mainz Cathedral, Trier Cathedral, and Aachen Cathedral. Those buildings are important historic landmarks, but Cologne Cathedral is the celebrated twin-spired Gothic monument associated with Cologne.
