The giant tree-like race created by Tolkien in Middle-earth is the Ents.
Ents are shepherds of trees who live in Fangorn Forest and are led by Treebeard, one of the oldest beings in Middle-earth. They resemble walking, speaking trees but are presented as a distinct people with their own language, memories, and customs.
In The Lord of the Rings, the Ents become involved in the conflict against Saruman after learning how Saruman’s forces are destroying forests. Their assault on Isengard is one of the story’s major turning points.
Ents are sometimes confused with Huorns. Tolkien presents Huorns as related, more mysterious tree-like beings, while Ents are the articulate tree-shepherd people. The word “ent” comes from an Old English word meaning “giant” or “being.”
