What is the name of the giant tree-like character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Treebeard is the giant tree-like character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Treebeard is an Ent, an ancient shepherd of trees who lives in Fangorn Forest. His Elvish name is Fangorn, which is also the name of the forest where he encounters Merry and Pippin. The two Hobbits persuade him to consider the damage Saruman’s forces are causing to the trees, helping trigger the Ents’ march against Isengard.

Readers sometimes confuse Treebeard with the Huorns, which are related but distinct tree-like beings, or with Tolkien’s character Tom Bombadil. Treebeard is notable for his extremely slow speech and long memory. The Ents’ story also reflects one of Tolkien’s recurring themes: the conflict between living natural environments and destructive industrial power.
