The giant tree-like beings in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth are called Ents.
Ents are sentient beings who resemble trees and serve as shepherds of the forests. Their best-known leader is Treebeard, who appears in The Two Towers and joins the resistance against Saruman’s forces.
The Ents’ march on Isengard is one of the major events of The Lord of the Rings. They destroy Saruman’s stronghold after deciding that the wizard’s industrial activity and destruction of trees cannot continue.
Ents are often confused with Huorns, another tree-related group in Tolkien’s legendarium. Huorns are darker and less clearly understood, while Ents are articulate, organized, and individually characterized. Tolkien’s use of the word also connects with the Old English term ent, meaning a giant or powerful being.
