Moaning Myrtle is the ghost who haunts the girls’ bathroom at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books.
Myrtle Warren was a Hogwarts student who died after looking into the eyes of the basilisk released from the Chamber of Secrets. Her death occurs in a bathroom, where her ghost remains and frequently complains, cries, and disrupts students. This history explains both her nickname and her connection to the Chamber’s mystery.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Myrtle’s haunting place becomes important evidence. Harry discovers that the bathroom contains the entrance to the hidden chamber, concealed inside a sink and opened by speaking Parseltongue. Myrtle’s memories also help clarify what happened on the night she died.
Myrtle is not one of Hogwarts’ four house ghosts. The house ghosts include the Grey Lady for Ravenclaw, the Fat Friar for Hufflepuff, and Nearly Headless Nick for Gryffindor. Slytherin’s ghost is the Bloody Baron.
