Back and Forth
Answer
Back and Forth
The Foo Fighters’ 2011 documentary about their history is Foo Fighters: Back and Forth. Directed by James Moll, the rockumentary chronicles the band’s formation, major lineup changes, career milestones, and the making of their seventh studio album, Wasting Light.
The film draws on more than 1,000 hours of historical and newly recorded footage. Interviews include Dave Grohl and the band’s then-current members, along with former Foo Fighters guitarists Franz Stahl and William Goldsmith and producer Butch Vig. Its title comes from the Wasting Light song “Back & Forth.”
The documentary grew out of the band’s decision to record Wasting Light in the garage of Grohl’s home in Encino. That deliberately rough setting provided a narrative contrast with the group’s success in stadiums and helped frame the film’s look back at its first 16 years.
Back and Forth premiered at the SXSW festival on March 15, 2011, followed by a surprise Foo Fighters concert. It later won the Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video in 2012, making it more than a conventional behind-the-scenes music film.
