Lost was the first virtual-reality film produced by Oculus Story Studio.
Oculus Story Studio premiered Lost in 2015 as an animated, interactive VR short. Rather than placing the viewer inside a fixed rectangular movie frame, the experience allowed the audience to look around a computer-generated environment and notice characters and events from different directions.
The project focused on the storytelling possibilities of presence and spatial attention. A viewer’s gaze could influence how the experience unfolded, although the work remained a guided narrative rather than a fully branching game. Lost helped demonstrate why VR films required different directing techniques from traditional cinema.
Oculus Story Studio later produced Henry and Dear Angelica. The studio was eventually closed, but its artists and technology influenced subsequent VR animation and immersive storytelling. Lost is sometimes confused with Henry because Henry won an Emmy, but Lost came first in the studio’s filmography.
